Block YouTube Ads – How To Stop Adverts on YouTube
So how do you block YouTube ads, those annoying rectangles that can often highlight a competitor on your own material? How very frustrating when you’ve uploaded your lovely new video to YouTube in an attempt to get onto the front page of Google, but someone else’s advertisement is now appearing on it.
How to block YouTube ads
The answer is actually quite simple. To block YouTube ads, you need to go to your YouTube account and click the downwards pointing arrow by your name at the top right of the page.
This will reveal a drop down menu. Select the Settings option, which will bring up another set of choices in the left hand sidebar.
At the very bottom, you will find the option Manage Settings and this will reveal a further set of options. At the bottom, you will find ‘Content displayed along with my uploaded videos’. Advertisements – Allow or Do Not Allow.
Check the box and Save Changes.
Simples…
Well, not quite.
When You Can’t Stop Adverts on YouTube
Having gone through the process, why had I been unable to stop the adverts? This required reading the smaller print in that section.
“Choosing this option will disable ads on all videos that you are currently monetising. Ads will only be disabled for videos where you own all the rights.”
It’s that crucial ‘where you own all the rights’. What I had done was add some music via the Enhancements tab at the top of each of your videos. Click on that and then select Audio and you will be offered a list of tracks that you are allowed to use as a soundtrack to your video presentation.
Making that selection means that I am unable to block YouTube ads from Google on my video… unless I replace those adverts with my own ad as an overlay.
The decision to take advantage of YouTube’s music also means that I cannot select Creative Commons for my sharing licence. I am only able to have the standard YouTube licence.

How To Block YouTube Ads on Featured Videos
You can choose which video you want to feature when someone arrives at your Channel. Click the drop down menu via the downwards arrow next to your account name at the top right. Select My Channel.
Click Edit on the top right above the new panel which is revealed. Then in the blank box at the top, choose your featured video. A large blue box will appear underneath with two check boxes. One is to make the video automatically start playing and the other is to prevent ads from being shown in videos on this page.
Make sure that you click ‘Apply’ to save your changes.
