‘Jo, I don’t think my Google Ads are showing – I’ve been checking and I can’t see them coming up in the Sponsored Links’
I’ve had a couple of clients ask me this question and the first thing I need to say is ‘STOP CHECKING ONLINE!’
If you type in your keyword and then don’t click on your own link when it does appear, Google will stop showing it to you because it thinks you are not interested.
If you type in your keyword and do click on your own link, you will get charged!
How to check whether your ad is showing in Sponsored Links
Log into your Google Adwords account. When you are in the Ads section of the offending campaign in your Adwords account, you can hover over the speech bubble next to ‘Approved’ for each ad and see a pop up which tells you whether your Ads are showing or not.
Adwords Preview Tool
Log into your Google Adwords account and then use the Ad Preview tool.
Just press the CTRL button on your keyboard and then click on this link and it will open it for you in a new window.
Type in the keyword you want to rank for and you will be told whether your ad is showing in the Sponsored Links section of the SERPS (Search Engine Results Page) with a green YES or a red NO.
If it is, you will be able to see it listed there so you can see what it looks like live.
If you cannot see it at the top of the page, make sure that you scroll down and check the right hand sidebar and also the positions at the very bottom of the page, underneath the last organic listing – Google has taken to putting some Adwords ads there.
Why are my ads not showing in the Sponsored Links section?
So, if you use the pop up that is shown when you hover over the speech bubble in the Ads section, you will see a Reason given at the bottom of the pop up.
What to do if Your Ad isn’t scheduled to run at the moment when you think it should be
In this case, it was because ‘Your ad isn’t scheduled to run at the moment’. This means you need to check out a few things.
In the Settings tab next to the Ads tab in this campaign, scroll down and find the ‘Schedule: Start date, end date, ad scheduling’ in the Advanced Settings section. You will see the option to edit your Ad Scheduling by days of the week and times of day. Have you set your ad to show at this time?
If all looks correct there, then you need to come out to view all your campaigns. Are there any further clues here?
Have you paused your campaign? Or has it been limited because of budget? If the latter, you will need to increase your daily budget because this has been exhausted and, therefore, your ad is unable to show for the rest of the day.
