Google Wallet Phones

I wrote about Google Wallet Phones in May 2011 – does anyone know if these are actually available in the UK yet? Has anyone actually used one? There does seem to be an Android app for Google Wallet into which you can add details of your credit cards.

I’m not sure how I feel about the whole security issue.

Having been told about it by Laura Betterly, I’ve been telling everyone I know about this possibility for months so I was very excited to see on The Google Commerce Blog that it’s all about to come together.

Obviously, it won’t be available in the UK for a while but we’ll get it eventually. One day not too far into the future, when we leave the house it will be with just our keys and our mobile phone. No need for credit cards or cash, we will just just pay by tapping our phone or showing a barcode. It means that Smartphones will become much cheaper because the mobile networks will be desperate to get a piece of this action.

As Google says: Because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will do more than a regular wallet ever could. You’ll be able to store your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards and gift cards, but without the bulk. When you tap to pay, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. Someday, even things like boarding passes, tickets, ID and keys could be stored in Google Wallet.
