LogMeIn vs Team Viewer Remote Access For Basic Beginners
I don’t do IT Support so I don’t need to log into customers’ computers. But what I do need is to be able to log into my own home computer when I’m away from home.
So, the two big players who could provide this solution are Team Viewer and LogMeIn. I Googled TeamViewer vs LogMeIn and found that the top article (and the most recent) was being criticised in the comments for being incorrect, whilst all the other articles seemed to be from several years ago and, therefore, it’s hard to know whether they are still accurate.
There was nothing for it but to try to work it out for myself.
Free Basic Team Viewer
My own IT Support guy has the professional paid version of Team Viewer and regularly logs into my machine remotely to sort me out. It all seems very easy, so my first instinct was to go with Team Viewer.
However, as is often the case with professional software, it’s not as easy as it looks to set up for those of us who are less Geeky.
You reach the home page and are offered a download option – but then you see another tab which talks about Remote Logins. As I pondered which one to use, I remembered that I’ve already got something on my computer from my own engineer. Bringing up the pop up that I require when he needs to access my computer gave no clues as to whether I could use this to access my own computer from elsewhere – it gave a password that I needed to give to the person who would be remoting in, not the other way around.
So I downloaded the software from the front page but it didn’t seem to be clear what I needed to do after that. I downloaded the QS remote login but, again, there were no clues after the download as to what I was supposed to do – or whether I had downloaded the correct software.
TeamViewer left me totally confused. It looked like there might be an option to take a tour but, when I clicked, it didn’t seem to do anything. I gave up

LogMeIn, on the other hand, required me to create an account to get started. Then, after I had activated my account, it told me to download some software onto the computer which I would want to access remotely.
Moving across to my laptop, I logged in to LogMeIn using the account I had created previously. After completing the various security protocols to access the PC, Bob’s Your Uncle, I was live on the PC screen from my laptop.
Basic LogMeIn – it does what it says on the tin.
UPDATE: LogMeIn is also available for Macs, as well as PCs.
Why can’t I copy and paste from one computer to another in LogMeIn?
UPDATE 2: Issues today with copying and pasting between computers when in Chrome. Use Firefox and download the LogMeIn app from the computer you are using to access the remote and copy and paste functionality seems to be restored.
