SEO for the Union of Bing and Yahoo
In late October 2010, Bing and Yahoo! joined forces to combine their 11% and 22% market shares and take over a third of the search market volume.
With the dominance of Google, many of us rarely use either engine, – unless forced to do so by the AVG Toolbar. I have to say that, when I first started optimising sites – with The Ark in July of 2010, I got my first success with Yahoo! Reaching the top of a search engine results page which shows over 2.5 million competitors for the first time leaves something of a mark. But, now, all the work spent optimising for Yahoo! is gone and we have to start afresh with ranking on Bing.
But, what to do?
Scott Jason in an article for Site Pro News gives us some clues:
Good titles that include your three most important keywords and your company name (optional) separated by pipes – Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Keyword 3 | Company Name.
Ensuring that your Description contains your three most important keywords.
Making sure each keyword appears on the written page about two to three times for every one hundred words, but no more than six times on a page.
He also mentions having SEO friendly URLs, so for WordPress this would mean: domain.com/search-engine-friendly
Elsewhere, in an interview with Mel Carson from Microsoft Advertising, Bing’s Stefan Weitz explained that, whilst a lot of mobile functions available in the US are not open to those of us in the UK, we have not been forgotten.
Bing are researching the European markets and will be finding ways to give the best service to customers in the UK who may not necessarily want the same things as their American cousins. He mentioned that we are more news-based here but that might not apply to people in Spain or Germany. European versions of Bing Mobile will be tailored to suit the requirements of the denizens of individual countries.
Certainly, I would be interested to learn more about Bing Deals which, with the success of Groupon, offers a similar service.
