The effects of social media mean that people do talk when there is good service on offer. And they talk in volumes. The problem with any advertising campaign is that you have no way of measuring the effectiveness of that advert, how many people it has reached and whether those potential customers actually liked what you are saying or the way you are saying it.
Michael Stratten, the author of ‘UnMarketing – Stop Marketing, Start Engaging – is convinced that the best way to manage relationships with both new and existing customers is to engage with them and offer them something of value in return for their email address so that you can continue to communicate with them.
Finding people who are talking about you is no longer hard. You can set up Google Alerts or have a search column on your Tweetdeck set up for specific keywords relating to your business or company name. Social Media is the best way to find and engage with potential customers because it allows you to join the conversation. Respond and try to provide value rather than selling stuff.
So often today, people seem to have this aspect of social media wrong. They’re just shouting at you about what you should look at and what they can do for you, not trying to have a conversation to discover what it is that you actually want.
