Why Facebook Personal Profiles Can Get Shut Down If They Are Really Businesses
If you’re using your Facebook personal profile as a business page, you need to be take note. This example of a photographer who felt that he was quite legitimately using his personal profile since his own name is also the name of his business got a nasty shock.
Facebook don’t take kindly to people posting business promotions for free to all their friends. They want you to use their Ads, Sponsored Stories and Promoted Posts. That’s how they make their money.
They have spent the last year gradually switching off all the ways that Business Pages could communicate with their fan base so they really don’t want them using Personal Profiles which allow unlimited access to the profiles of their ‘friends’.
And it’s also not fair to those businesses who do play by the rules. Edgerank is a nightmare for some of them. If fans do not interact regularly with their wall – and that’s the only way that they can interact with fans for free – then those likers will stop seeing their status updates in their newsfeeds.
It doesn’t matter how good your images and videos, how amusing and thought provoking your status updates, only a small percentage of your likers will ever get to see them and that figure diminishes drastically if people are not engaging with your Wall anyway.
But, whilst it is now possible to report a large variety of errant Pages to Facebook the list of options on their reports does not seem to extend to businesses masquerading as personal profiles.
Personally, I don’t really like the idea of snitching because I feel it is bad karma. But I can fully understand the frustration of those honest business owners who are using Facebook in good faith and watching others flout the rules with impunity.
However, as was mentioned above, Facebook do notice these characters eventually. They will monitor their activity and limit the number of friends they can make and, eventually, disable their accounts when they push too far.
That’s when they lose all the friends that they have made and must start again.
If you have mistakenly created a personal profile instead of a business page, it is possible to change it to a proper business page without losing all your friends. Whilst you will need to take copies of any photos or videos, your friends will be turned into fans so that you don’t have to start building your audience all over again.
Do it now, while you still can.
